At least 729 people have died and more than 1,300 people have fallen ill from the viral disease in the worst outbreak ever, primarily affecting Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and recently in Nigeria. Key facts Ebola virus disease (EVD), formerly known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever, is a severe, often fatal illness in humans. EVD outbreaks have killed up to 90% of infected patients. EVD outbreaks occur primarily in remote villages in Central and West Africa, near tropical rainforests. The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission. Fruit bats are considered to be the natural host of the Ebola virus. Severely ill patients require intensive supportive care. No licensed specific treatment or vaccine is available for use in people or animals.

The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians and other residents that there is no new case of Ebola outbreak.  Addressing a joint news conference in Abuja, the Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu says two persons, who had primary contact with the late Patrick Sawyerr, who died of Ebola virus in Lagos, had been quarantined while 69 others were under close surveillance.
