UCJ Editorial: 9 months of idling; Lessons learned and progressive way forward

Image
Main gate, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology It all started with a notification on June 13th, 2016, of the indefinite 2015/2016 Harmattan semester break, when we were asked to go home until further notice. “Why would the school close down a week to the commencement of exams?”, we asked ourselves. *** Weeks later, as if the indefinite semester break was not enough, news of ASUU, LAUTECH, embarking on strike on the 19th of September filled the air. However, students, as optimistic as ever, continued to have hopes of resuming to academic activities soon -- the soon that did not come until 9 months later.

No Examination; No Explanation: Ladokites react to second false examination date

Image
In a rather confusing turn of events, the Harmattan Semester examinations which were scheduled by the school management to commence today, Monday, February 20, will, apparently, not hold. The examination was originally supposed to begin the previous Monday, February 13, as stated by the school management in an email announcing the resumption date, however, it was postponed until Monday, February 20, due to what the university Registrar described as 'logistic reasons.' This has thrown the students into confusion causing them to air their opinions on social media.

From January 27 to February 20; Are we being scammed by the school management?

Image
It has been over two weeks since the resumption of academic activities in LAUTECH was announced by the school management, however, academic activities are yet to start in the institution. Students resumed on the 27th of January with high hopes only to realise that the ASUU faction of the institution was still on strike. All hopes that the issue would be resolved before February 13 was dampened as the examination timetable and order of arrangement was not even sent. And on top of it all, a notification of exam postponement was sent in on the 12th of February. It all seems like the students are involved in a game of ping pong between the school management and ASUU. Even as the examinations has been postponed, it is still evident that examination would not hold on the 20th as ASUU has not officially called off their strike.

APPLY FOR THE UNILEVER-WECYCLERS' PRODUCT DESIGN COMPETITION Deadline: March 8th, 2017 Today nearly everyone, everywhere, every day, comes into contact with disposed recyclable materials. As the amount of urban waste being produced is growing faster than the rate of urbanization, Wecyclers ( www.wecyclers.com )  tackles the waste challenge in the environment by using a fleet of low-cost cargo bicycles called Wecycles, to offer a convenient household collection of recyclable materials. The Wecycle is a combination of a cart and a regular bicycle. The body of the cart is made up of strong metal structure to hold the weight of the recyclable materials. In an effort to collect more recyclable waste, a Wecycle rider could go as far as overloading the Wecycle and this results in an additional pressure that often forces the chains to break off and the tube of tires to flatten.

The 2017 Sigma Club Essay Competition for Nigerian Students

Image
The concern of this maiden edition of Sigma Club Essay hinges on the growing attraction of the world outside formal education to young Nigerians. In the past few years, social commentators have substantially discussed and written about how formal education in Nigeria has become excessively unattractive to our youths in terms of quality and process; how grossly inadequate, the attention government at all levels is paying to this anomaly and how social and non-educational activities are at the core of corporate fascination. Sigma Club, as a nation and youth oriented organisation hereby joins in amplifying this concern and with the understanding that ‘Street’ is in this context metaphorical, equally invite eligible young people to join the discussion by sending in their entry on the below topic. TOPIC: "NATIONAL ECONOMIC RECESSION AND INSECURITY: SAVING EDUCATION TO SAVE NIGERIA" WHO IS ELIGIBLE  Interested persons must be UNDERGRADUATES of approved Nigerian Unive

LAUTECH students to engage with the school management on Monday

Image
LAUTECH students have agreed in a congress held today to stage a 'intellectual engagement' with the school management on Monday, February 13. The students, led by some student's representatives, met on the campus to discuss a way forward after the school management made them resume on campus for academic activities since January 27, only to meet the lecturers still on strike. During the congress, the students deliberated on how to make their grieviances known to the school management. While some suggested a peaceful dialogue between the students and the school management, others were head-strong on protesting at the university's senate building. Some even suggested disrupting the verification process of the incoming 100-level student scheduled to start on Monday, however, the suggestion was kicked against.

“Why are the owner governments hiding the report from the public?" - ASUU demands release of visitation panel report

Image
Shortly after addressing the students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, yesterday, on the state of the institution, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), released a statement calling on the two owner state governments to release the visitation panel report on the institution. The statement which was issued by the ASUU Chairman, Dr. Biodun Olaniran, was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Tuesday. According to The Guardian Newspaper   report, "ASUU said it was pertinent that the report is released, saying the content would go a long way in affecting their careers at the university. "The statement said: “Why are the owner governments hiding the report from the public? Does the report contain facts which both governments are uncomfortable with? “Are the governments really interested in the panel’s report or they just put it in place to create impression that the LAUTECH issue was being attended to at that time.’’

No resumption until we receive the plan - ASUU Chairman

Image
Premium Time published an exclusive interview with the chairman of ASUU LAUTECH, Biodun Olaniran, yesterday, February 5. The interview sought answers to the several pressing crises going on in LAUTECH.  We took our time to analyze the over 2000 worded article to bring out the key points. These are the highlights: First, according to ASUU Chairman, the cause of the whole crisis in the first place was the “non-release of subventions to the university and subsequent use of internally generated revenue to offset salaries.” He added that the problem did not just start last year, in fact, ASUU has been campaigning against the use of IGR since May 5, 2015.
