BREAKING: LAUTECH ASUU Suspends Strike; Academic Activities to Commence Monday

Image
LAUTECH ASUU has finally suspended its four-months-long strike (or two years, in total) after a meeting with its members at the university’s main campus in Ogbomoso on Tuesday. I spoke to the Secretary of ASUU LAUTECH Dr Abegunrin and the union’s Zonal Coordinator Dr Ade Adejumo who confirmed that the strike had been suspended with immediate effect but academic activities will kick off on Monday, October 23. “The zone will have to be briefed, national will have to be briefed, but the Congress has suspended the strike in principle as from today but full lectures will resume on Monday,” Dr Adejumo said. “Skeletal things will continue, preparatory to the commencement of full academic activities on Monday.” The suspension is coming following news that the lecturers started receiving their three-months’ salary arrears -- one of their demands for resumption -- during the weekend. Over the months, LAUTECH had been riddled with numerous resumption dates which turned out to ho

UPDATE: Lectures did not begin today as promised. Here's what we know

Image
During a congress with students last week, LAUTECH Vice-chancellor Prof. A.S. Gbadegesin guaranteed that academic activities will commence in the university today, Monday. Clearly, that plan did not fall through, and is surprising for many, considering the news that the lecturers got some portion of their salaries over the weekend. But the burning question now is "What next?" To answer that question, we spoke to a source with knowledge of the recent developments, here's a verbatim transcript of everything he told us: The staff got 3 months salary over the weekend However, they are requesting for salaries for last year but are being paid for this year Nevertheless, ASUU is calling their congress for tomorrow The likely reason why the Congress did not hold today: "They received their alert during the weekend which means they had to give their member 24hours notification that's why the Congress will be holding tomorrow." Majority be

Despite 2-years strike, LAUTECH ranked best state university in Nigeria - Vice-chancellor

FILE: LAUTECH Vice-chancellor, Prof. A.S. Gbadegesin Despite being on strike for two consecutive sessions , coupled with issues of poor funding from Oyo and Osun state governments, and owing lecturers at least 12 months salaries, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, was ranked best university in Nigeria, according to the university’s Vice-chancellor Prof. A.S Gbadegesin. “Although we were not in session for two years, we were ranked the best state university in July and second best in NUC ranking,” he said while addressing students during a joint congress on Tuesday. Prof. Gbadegesin made this remark in an attempt to pacify the students who were clearly agitated due to the prolonged strike that had truncated academic activities in the school for the past two years. According to a recent ranking by Nigeria Universities Commision (NUC) published in July, LAUTECH placed 21st on the general list which included federal-, state-, and private-owned universiti

Outcome of congress between school management and students: "Lectures will start on Monday"

Image
The Vice-Chancellor of Ladoke Akintola University Prof. A.S. Gbadegesin along with other staff of the university held an interactive session with students of the university where he addressed the students on the progress being made in ensuring the resumption of academic activities in the university. The school management had originally announced that lectures were going to begin on Monday, October 3. However, the striking academic staff union refuted this claim stating that they were not going to resume until the school management showed full commitment. In the meeting, he assured the students that “the end of the struggle is here,” adding that “of all stakeholders in LAUTECH, the students are the most important.” One of the management staff appealed to the agitated students to exercise patience, promising that “LAUTECH will bounce back in the next few hours.” The Vice-Chancellor back up his statement after being pressured by students, saying that “by the grace of God, lectu

UPDATE: Outcome of ASUU Meeting with Governing Council

Image
Today was packed with a number of meetings and congresses. Here's what you need to know. Students met at 250 LT by 10am where the Dean of Students Affairs gave updates on the latest developments in the negotiations between the school management and members of the striking staff unions. One of such developments was a meeting which also held today between LAUTECH governing council and the academic staff union . Students deliberated and prayed (literally) for a favourable outcome of the meeting, while clearly exercising self-restraints in order not to spook the lecturers and management who had already expressed fear of being attacked or 'kidnapped' by angry students. However, from a new unverified memo currently being circulated supposedly signed by the ASUU LAUTECH Chairman, Biodun Olaniran, things may not have gone as the students hoped. According to the memo , the following resolutions were reached: The Union rejected the payment of one month salary through

What Are Ladokites Up To Today; Congress Or Protest?

Image
Yesterday , we received a copy of a memo from some students' representatives about a Congress that was supposed to be held yesterday with the school management. However, the students declined to attend as the school management allegedly wanted the meeting behind closed doors. Another option was instead provided for the management to address the entire student populace, particularly to explain why they asked students to return to school knowing the commencement academic activities were nowhere near. But here's where the confusion came in: An open congress was fixed to hold today, Monday, October 9, but it turns out some students have mistaken it to be a protest. We spoke to one of the students' representative this morning who clarified that today has been set aside for a peaceful Congress and NOT a Protest . Why this matters : The Congress is expectedly aimed at clarifying the current state of things in the university. According to the students' re

SCOOP: Payment of LAUTECH Lecturers Salaries will Begin This Week

Image
A recent circular obtained exclusively by the Union of Campus Journalists (LAUTECH) reveals that the Governing Council has approved a new timeline for the payment of the lecturers three months salary, taking effect from Monday, October 9. The memo, signed by LAUTECH's Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mr. J.A. Agboola, is a product of the emergency meeting held by the council on Friday, October 6. However, the salaries won't be paid all at once. According to the memo, "the Council headed by Professor Oladapo Afolabi, announced that the salary for three months would be staggered within four weeks. " This spacing, it stated, would "allow for proper accounting procedure." The Council said workers should pick up cheques for their salary on Monday. It said the use of cheque is to ensure that those repaying bank loans have access to their salary. Why this matters : It is not yet clear how, but this development will play a major role in hastening the

LAUTECH resumption today did not go as planned; here's everything you need to know

Image
An empty lecture theater in LAUTECH today So, after much waiting to see what today, October 3 -- the day lectures were proposed to begin in LAUTECH -- would turn out like, students were faced with another disappointment. It turns out lecturers have still not received their 'alert' and if you remember, they are firmly holding on to a 'no pay, no resumption' policy. You should also note that the Chairman Governing Council of the institution, Prof. Dayo Afolabi had assured the lecturers that they would start receiving salaries from last Friday. But in an exclusive interview with The NewsGuru today, the zonal coordinator for ASUU LAUTECH said: “The two governors (Ajimobi and Aregbesola) promised to clear the salaries in tranches beginning from today. At the last meeting we held with the management, the information passed to us was that the money was still being expected from the governors. And as I speak to you now, (Tuesday), we are yet to receive
