Secret invitations: Why is Ajimobi sending out invitations to some LAUTECH students, and who has accepted his invitation?

The Oyo state government has been reportedly sending out invitations via text message to some LAUTECH students’ leaders, summoning them to a meeting at Ibadan.

Although the reason for the meeting is unclear, there have been speculations that the motive is to cajole the students’ leaders who are supposed to lead the mass action on Monday to back down.

This invitation is already causing some controversy among the students’ leader as some seemed to be cozying up to the Governor’s call, while others have either rejected his invitation or publicly stated that they were not going to compromise their stand concerning the protest on Monday 9th.

The PRO of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) reportedly commented that the meeting was ‘not for a serious talk but for an act of “flexing their jaws”.’ His statement attracted serious backlash, even from former LAUTECH SUG President, Solace Bakare, who referred to him as ‘myopic’ for cozying up to the government.

While we cannot categorically confirm who will and will not honor the invitation, here are some who have made a public statement on the invitation. On behalf of the National Liberty Vanguard, Freedom Siaisia condemned the negotiation meeting on Facebook.

“The entirety of National Liberty Vanguard frowns at the aforementioned Negotiation talks the Landlord of Oyo State Government is arranging with some unnamed and Masked students to put a stop to the Protest coming up on 9th of January 2017,” he wrote.

Former SUG President, Solace Baker, also responded on Facebook in a lengthy post where he condemned the actions of the government and the students accepting the invitation. You can read his full response here.

However, Lautech Mouthpiece, who is popular for his controversial articles on Facebook, acknowledged that he was also invited for the meeting in a post but did not confirm whether or not he will be attending. “JUST RECEIVED AN INVITATION FROM GOVERNOR AJIMOBI QUARTERS,” he announced.

He added that even though he is yet to know the stakeholders being invited for the interactive session at the Governor's office, he would ‘just’ have to honor the invitation by making himself available.

Whether these ‘leaders’ will compromise their stand and cozy up to the government camp or fight and defend the rights of their fellow Ladokites, we can only wait and see.
