The latest news on LAUTECH resumption

Reopen LAUTECH
Get ready Ladokites, from all indications, LAUTECH will most likely resume next week.

The Oyo state government and ASUU chairman have hinted this.

Before you crucify me, here are the facts:

As you must have seen in the news, Oyo and Osun state governments have both payed N500m (N250m each) into the coffers of the university.

Yes, this is true, we spoke to Ajimobi’s head of digital communications, Babjide Fadoju, on Saturday, and confirmed he confirmed it.

Ajimobi’s Senior Assistant on Students and Youth, Bolaji Afeez, also confirmed this fact, adding that government is “hopeful of a next week resumption.”
“We have reached out to ASUU leadership regarding their resolution of waiting for the report of the panel as we are hopeful that the new development will reopen LAUTECH by next week,” he said.

Since the government has held its own end of the bargain, what then is causing the delay?

Well, like Bolaji Afeez stated above, what ASUU is asking for is beyond salaries; they also want a sustainable plan for how the university will be funded.

After their congress on the 19th, ASUU resolved, among others things, that two months salaries should be paid as promised (which has been done - to an extent), and written document on how outstanding salary arrears would be paid and how to university will be funded going forward should be presented before they end their action.

They also resolved to continue the industrial action until the report of the visitation panel is presented and agreed upon.

However, ASUU may now be willing to cool down on their demands a bit.

According to Premium Times, LAUTECH ASUU chairman, Olaniran Biodun, said, “...once the money is paid [which it has] then we can change our stance and reconsider for the sake of the students, but that will come with a letter on how we will fund the university.”

He added, “Personally, in my own view, and not that of ASUU, with the money being paid, then the crisis will be over soon.”

“What we clamoured for is commitment, and if they have shown commitment, then the varsity will be reopened soon, once the money is paid out.”

This is progress!
